Zenit executed counter-attacking plan - Villas-Boas

Despite the Spanish side having 62 per cent of possession in the Champions League clash Zenit still emerged triumphant from the game at the Mestalla.

Thanks to a decisive second-half strike by midfielder Axel Witsel. It has now been revealed it was part of the plan to allow their opponents dominate possession.

The plan by head coach Andre Villas-Boas allowed Zenit to win despite Valencia dominating possession and having 15 shots at goal in the Champions League clash.

Brazilian talisman Hulk scored twice with Axel Witsel bagging the winner at the Mestalla.

The former Chelsea and Tottenham boss said:

"We played well, although we let Valencia have most of the possession. That was our strategy - to counter-attack."

"That is how we got our three goals. The result is fair. To have a lot of the ball in football does not necessarily mean a lot.

"That can work during a match and today we were fortunate to win the game using this strategy.

"We did not have the majority of the possession, but when we had the ball we did well."
