PLAYER RATINGS - Club Bruges 0-4 Manchester United (agg 1-7): Wayne Rooney hits HATTRICK

After missing out last year, Manchester United made their return to the Champions League in style. They thumped Club Bruges 4-0 with Wayne Rooney's hat-trick being the highlight of the night. Ander Herrera got the other goal in the 63rd minute in what was ultimately an easy win for the Red Devils in Belgium.

I bring to you my ratings of the performances of the various players at the Jan Breydel Stadium.

Sergio Romero:  6 Few important saves in the first half but still showing some shakiness.

Matteo Darmian: 7 Answered every question asked of him by the Belgians. Looks like Man Utd have finally found a new long term resident for the no 2 position.

Chris Smalling: 6.5 Another composed performance who is fast becoming the leader of this Man Utd defence. Showing reason why Arsene Wenger has always been interested in signing him.

Daley Blind: 6.5 Another solid performance from the versatile Dutchman.  Already forming a solid defensive partnership with Smalling.

Luke Shaw: 7 Has been showing his old self this season. Always full of energy and running, constantly bombed forward to join attacks.

Michael Carrick: 7 The catalyst for this Man United team. Kept things ticking. Another metronomic performance for the veteran.

Ander Herrera: 7 The fan favourite made his first start of the season, and showed why they have been calling for his inclusion. Scored one and assisted another.

Juan Mata: 6.5 In his customary style, he constantly came inside from the right and set up Rooney's hat-trick goal in what was a lively performance.

Adnan Januzaj: 5.5 Nothing spectacular. Was replaced at the break.

Memphis Depay: 6.5 No goals today but kept the Bruges defence busy and managed an assist.

Wayne Rooney: 8.5 Really came to life after the first goal. Looked like his old self in the second half ad he went on to grab a hat-trick.

SUBS

Bastian Schweinsteiger: 8 His introduction to the match coincided with United ripping the game away from Bruges. Set up the fourth goal with a brilliant pass in his best United performance yet.

Ashley Young: 6 Came on with the game all but won. Was however unlucky not to have an assist as Hernandez missed sitter.

Javier Hernandez 6.5 Not a good night for overall. Slipped while taking a penalty and also miss from close range late on. His year sitting on the bench is showing.
