After ending an 878-minute drought with a hat-trick to secure Manchester United's passage to the Champions League group stage.
The Manchester United captain said he never stopped believing in his own ability.
After striking three times at the Jan Breydelstadion on the way to a 4-0 victory over Club Bruges, the Englishman revealed he had not been worried about the goal drought.
'I would have been worried if it was going three, four, five games more but it's early days in the season and I knew when the chances came I would take them,' he said.
'Everyone goes back to towards the end of the season when I didn't score.
'People make a big thing of it. I understand. I have understood since a young age because of my name, because of who I am, it will get publicised a lot more.
'To be honest if I didn't have a strong character that would have affected me but I know my qualities, I know what I give to the team,'
The win sees United return to European football after missing out last year.
