Holland 0-1 Iceland: New coach same Netherlands Gylfi Sigurdsson strikes to condemn host to defeat

Thanks to a penalty goal from Swansea playmaker Iceland moved a step closer to a place at Euro 2016 as they secured a shock 1-0 victory over 10-man Holland on Thursday.

The penalty was controversial as the referee awarded the spot kick despite it seeming Gregory van der Wiel won the ball in a challenge with Birkir Bjarnason.

Danny Blind took over after Guus Hiddink quit because of the team's unconvincing performances earlier in the campaign, it however continued as Iceland won for the second time to complete a fairytale double over the Dutch in Group A.

The win puts Iceland on top of Group A with 18, two ahead of second-placed Czech Republic. The Netherlands are third on 10 points.

Speaking after the match Dutch manager Danny Blind hailed his opponents: '

''They were well organised, very structured and difficult to break down,'

He also criticized centre back Martins Indi who was shown a red card:

'The turning point was the red card. I think Martins Indi acted unbelievably unprofessionally.'

The opponent's co-coach Heimir Hallgrimsson however hailed his own charges:

"This is the biggest achievement in our football history.
