Simeone happy with his 'exceptional' Atletico Madrid side

The Argentine lead his side to an opening day victory in the UEFA Champions League.

He stated how pleased he was with the victory and the performance of match-winner Antoine Griezmann.

His side took control of the tie through an early double from Antoine Griezmann in the first half as Atletico dominated the Group C clash.

Although substitute Umut Bulut threatened for Gala on several occasions, the Liga side were full deserving of all three points.

He told reporters:

"We played remarkable football in the first half, we were exceptional," said Simeone, although he still saw room for improvement in their overall performance.

"We nearly threw it away at the end [of the first half], because we were poor in our work-rate at that time.

"But in the second half, we played according to the score and we controlled it well.

The Argentine manager also praised his strike duo of Griezmann and Jackson Martinez:

"I thought that Antoine and Jackson were very good also, they both worked very hard.

"The whole team was terrific, because it was a tough match."

The next fixture for Los Rojiblancos will see them travel to Benfica in their next Group C match at the end of September.
