Vermaelen: Barcelona share Arsenal's philosophy

The former Gunners captain suffered with a long-term injury during his first season with the Catalan club last year.

Having made a return to fitness, the Belgian centre-back is keen to bring further success to the double treble winners.

The former Arsenal and Ajax defender spoke of the similarities shared by his former clubs and his current one.

He is a graduate of the famous Ajax academy, he moved to the Gunners in 2009 where he enjoyed a five-year spell.

The 29-year-old pointed out that his old clubs have much in common with Barca.

Speaking to Barcelona's official website he said:

"It's the same philosophy. They are teams who want to play football to entertain and to avoid long balls."

"[To] keep the ball on the ground, scoring as much as possible and create a lot of chances.

"Having now recovered from a hamstring problem which forced him to spend a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Vermaelen is hoping to play a key role in the club's future success.

"I feel good and I hope to contribute my share to the new success of the team," he continued.

"Last year we won the treble. It will not be easy to repeat that, but we will certainly try. The team is largely the same and we are just as hungry as last season
