Red Hot Giovinco creates MLS history in Toronto FC win over Chicago

Despite the fact that it took an extra day, there was no deny the Italian his record. On a day Sebastian Giovinco broke the Major League Soccer single-season record for total points in a season on the way to helping Toronto FC move one step closer to a first-ever playoff spot, was also the day he had a goal taken away from him.

The Italian star took an audacious outside-of-the-foot chip which helped his side start a comeback in their 3-2 victory over the Chicago Fire, however the goal was given to teammate, Osorio despite the fact that all those in the stadium felt that the goal belonged to the Italian star.

Even the player who was given the goal Osorio, said the goal was Giovinco's, "I hope that the MLS goes back and reviews [the goal] and gives it to Seba," Osorio said. "It takes a special quality to pull off something like that. It wasn't a set-up, it was a goal and I think he took it very well."

Even the club's twitter website posted on its page a video to help viewers determine who should really get the goal. The video can be seen below:

Another person to add his own opinion to debate was Toronto head coach Greg Vanney, who praised Giovinco for his contribution in the goal that started his team's comeback after they fell behin to a goal from former Red Gilberto inside the first minute of play.

The coach said:

"I think the intention, at a bare minimum, was to put it on top of the goalkeeper and try to get guys to attack the goalkeeper."

"The intention was a very good one, the result is a great goal for him and everybody, so we might as well give him credit for it."

However, that didn't stop Giovinco from going on to net two more goals in the match which brought his tally for the season to a record 19 goals and 16 assists. Such has been the impact of the Italian marksman that he is on the verge of leading his side to their first ever MLS playoffs.

However all such doubts were cleared when a day after the MLS credited the Italian with the goal after it was able to successfully determine that his teammate Osorio didn't have a touch as the ball went inside the net.

It takes his tally to 20 goals so far for the season, and combined with his league-leading 15 assists make him the first player to score 20 goals and hand out 10 assists in the same MLS season.

There is no denying the Italian is in a league of his own with this record which he could possibly break if he manages more than 19 assists. Let's wait and see...
