Carragher: 'Klopp is great for Liverpool'

The German manager joined Liverpool on a three year deal on Thursday. He was officially unveiled by the Anfield at 10am on Friday.

A former player of the club and ex vice captain Jamie Carragher spoke of his belief in the former Dortmund coach.

The Sky Sport pundit said: 'Klopp is great for Liverpool.'

He sated his belief that Klopp is the elite level manager who will bring success to Liverpool.

He also likened him to Rafa Benitez- insisting he would fit in at Manchester United, Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Speaking on Sky Sports he said:

'He looks full of life, with the role at Sky [I have] now, I think he will be great for us, but most importantly he will be great for Liverpool.

'There's no doubt that Liverpool have an A-class manager. In the past there was a fear we couldn't attract players and managers of calibre, but if Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United were looking for a new manager, he would come into the reckoning of all those clubs, so we've done very well to get him on board.

He also feels the manager can help them compete in Europe against the European giants while also comparing him to old Liverpool manager, Rafa Benitez:

'We haven't got the finances to compete with the top teams at the moment, and the reason you take on Klopp is that he is used to taking on the big boys financially in the transfer market.

He also feels the German is a better fit for the club than former Real Madrid and Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti:

'I think it suits Liverpool a lot more than Carlo Ancelotti, and there are parallels that can be drawn with Rafa Benitez, coming from Valencia.

'He's got a charisma about him, he's got a personality. I think we all saw that at Dortmund, he looked like someone as a player you'd like to play for. His personality and track record will hopefully bring players to the club - maybe some of the players at Dortmund. What players you can attract to the club is a big part of management.'

He also spoke of the need for the new manager to start with a win:

'He needs to start well, and get a win at Tottenham. The league now is very open. Chelsea are now in a fight for top four, so there maybe there's one position open there that we thought maybe was secure from last season.

'The aim [in his first season] is to get Champions League football, and maybe a trophy – that would be a great start to his career.

'Any manager, any top manager, wants balance. Sometimes getting a balance in defence and attack is tough. But when Dortmund were at their best, they were tight at one end and scoring goals at the other. Hopefully he can bring that to the club.

'I think he is a back-four man. Predominantly he likes to do this with one striker, but in the game today, 90 per cent of managers want to do this. But Liverpool aren't scoring so the aim has been how to get two strikers on the pitch, while making sure you're not out-numbered in terms of possession.'

The German manager replaces Brednan Rodgers who was sacked by Liverpool on Sunday after three years at the club.
