Cyprus 0-1 Wales: Gareth Bale headed goal takes Wales on step closer to Euro 16

After avoiding defeat against Belgium in both games, Wales knew to get the job done they had to beat the likes of Cyprus.

They face Israel in Cardiff on Sunday and the full points there should ensure they can start booking the tickets to France.

It is an unknown territory for a country that hasn't qualified for a major tournament since 1958. Not even with the likes of Bellamy and Giggs. However with each match Bale is driving them towards their dream.

Although things seemed tentative in Nicosia, they got the job done. A right-wing cross by Jazz Richards was met with force and fury by the head of the team's leader Gareth Bale.

Just when it seemed like a draw was the most likely result Bale showed up again. Just like he has been showing up throughout this qualifying campaign.

He is on the verge of history with his country and the manner which he celebrated with the team's bench sprinting into a huddle with a throng of Wales players and staff, showed the unity in the team.

Despite having a below par game prior to the game he showed up when it really mattered.
He has now scored six of his country's nine goals. It is thanks to him that Wales have one foot at Euro 2016.

With the way it is they should beat Belgium to top spot in Group B. Who would have thought that possible when the draw was made.

It is not just Bale's goal scoring that has been driving them they also possess an outstanding defensive record.

Led by Swansea captain Ashley Williams they were solid throughout extending their record to 414minutes a run without conceding.

The two goals let in this campaign have been set pieces. That kind of defensive performance reminds me of Italy's at the 2006 World Cup.

Now that they are a few steps away from history they will fight on and hope Bale continues to make the difference.
