Henry needs 'psychological and mental transformation' to succeed as a coach - Wenger

Arsenal's record goal scorer Thierry Henry has been warned about the 'psychological and mental transformation' he would have to undergo if he wishes to succeed as a manager.

The warning was delivered by his former Arsenal coach and mentor Arsene Wenger.

Speaking to Arsenal's website the Frenchman spoke if the changes that would have to occur if his former captain was to have a successful coaching career.

Wenger who is an important figure in Henry's career after signing him for Arsenal from Juventus in 1999. They both enjoyed their best years together with Henry becoming the club's record goalscorer and Wenger coaching Arsenal to an unbeaten Premier league triumph.

He outlined how different being a coach is to being a footballer.

'[Henry] will discover what the job is about and you have to go through that process if you want to one day manage a football team,' Wenger told Arsenal's official club website.

'The job of a player is centred on you and the job of a coach is centred on others. You find you just focus on others and how you can help them.

'It demands a psychological and mental transformation that is not always easy. It also demands how to get what you know is available in other people in the most simplistic way.'

Henry is currently undertaking his coaching badges while he works with Arsenal's u-18 team.

He also works as a TV pundit for BT sports, a position he has held since his retirement from football.

The Frenchman had an eventful career which saw him play for Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal, Barcelona and New York Red Bulls before retiring from the game.
