After super sub Harry Kane came on and scored the opening goal it was left to Rooney to seal it with a late penalty to become England's best goal scorer of all time.

He left the pitch at full time a fulfilled man. The way he took the penalty showed how determined he was to make the record his and his alone. He hit it hard and true, leaving Switzerland keeper Yann Sommer no chance.

Rooney was never going to miss, not on home soil, not with David Beckham rising from his seat in his executive box to watch the Manchester United striker reach his half century.

Everyone responded, with Roy Hodgson heading out towards the edge of his technical area to salute this record-busting forward for eclipsing Sir Bobby Charlton's record.

His pre-match wish to score his 50th England goal in Wembley was fulfilled. His detractors might point to his underwhelming start to the season. However, the former Man Utd man can feel dignified as the record is the reward of a fantastic career that has seen him win everything possible at club level.

He is soon to break Manchester United's goal scoring record, which would mean retiring as an definite English football legend and arguably the greatest English player of his generation.
