Liverpool fans should give Rodgers more time - Jamie Redknapp

The former Liverpool midfielder has called for calm heads following calls for the Liverpool manager to be relieved of his duties following their loss to Manchester United.

Speaking about the Manchester United defeat the former England man said:

"It is always damaging when Liverpool lose to Manchester United. It is a result that hurts. Yes, it was a bad performance but this is no time to panic," he said in his column for Daily Mail.

"Brendan Rodgers is under pressure and there are problems in that team. They are fragile at the back and I still feel they lack a creative central midfielder. But Rodgers has to be the man to try and solve those issues," he added.

He also said the club should resist the urge to go after former Borrusia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp

"There is no sense in sacking a manager so soon in a season. Jurgen Klopp is the elephant in the room but Liverpool backed Rodgers this summer. Now they have to stand by that decision."

"Big money was spent in the transfer window and the new players deserve time to settle. If results don't improve then maybe it will be time for a conversation. But right now this team must start playing again."

He also asked more realistic expectations from the supporters:

"Sometimes I think people get too easily carried away with Liverpool. The club has fantastic history but they have only made the Champions League once in the past six years. Maintaining a top-four place has to be the current aim."
