Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has explained the reason why he benched Argentina international Lionel Messi against Atletico Madrid.
The Barca legend came off the bench to score the winner, his manager has now given the reason for leaving his talisman on the bench.
"I spoke with Messi and we both understood that he came back from a long trip and it was best not to risk him. He is very important for us and we want him in the best condition, we need to take care of him.
He spoke of his happiness at the win which let them maintain their perfect start to the season:
"We have a hard calendar and it is very important to beat a direct rival for the title.
