In a move that came as a surprise to many, it has however been revealed that Manchester United were not the only big club after the French teenager.
Three other European giants had been closely monitoring the progress of Anthony Martial for some time but were beaten to his signing by United.
Monaco were determined to keep Martial for at least one more season but last week's defeat to Valencia in the Champions League play-off made them more open to negotiating his sale.
United started bidding at £36million but Monaco insisted on bonuses which could take the package as high as £58m.
Tottenham made a £20million bid earlier in the summer which was rejected before Monaco changed their mind. Chelsea were also said to have registered an interest.
