Serena Williams beats sister Venus to reach US Open semi-finals

In a family affair that was played on a grand slam stage, Venus Williams unsuccessfully tried to halt her sister Serena's march towards history.
Serena, 34 won 6-2 1-6 6-3 but not before she was made to dig through by her elder sister after loosing the second set. She is now on her way to becoming  only the fourth woman to do the calendar year Grand Slam.
With the next challenge coming in the form of unseeded Italian Roberta Vinci in the semi finals, few will put their money on Serena not making history.
It looked like something Serena didn't want to go through, she definitely wasn't enjoying it as she made sure to avoid to making much eye contact with her sister.
It felt more like an ordeal for the 21-time Major champion who recovered from a second set collapse to finish the job in one hour and 38 minutes.
As they embraced at the net after a twelfth and final ace the feeling was that of relief for the champion elect.
Serena said: 'She is the toughest player I have ever played in my life and the best person I know.'
'It's going against your best friend and the toughest competitor in women's tennis so it's very difficult. When I'm playing her I don't think of her as my sister.
'Holding serve was all I could do in the third set, it wasn't easy at all.'
