Eliaquim Mangala has indeed confirmed he was discussed as a makeweight in the deal to bring Nicolas Otamendi to Manchester City.
As City sought to sign the Argentine international Valencia wanted the France international on a season-long loan.
The 24 year old struggled last season as his form flickered and with the cost of his transfer from Porto making him the most expensive defender in history he struggled to justify the fee.
However an upturn in his form which has seen him partner Kompany to clean sheets in all their matches so far convinced City he could deliver this time round.
The player explained how he dealt with the situation:
'I refused because it would have been a step backwards. I felt good enough to win my place,'
